Big Game Hunter or Houndsmen

Everyone who hunt's is a blend of both Hunter and Hounds-men.
Let's say
A. If you hunt for mostly the thrill of the hunt, The pride of taking trophy type game you are a Hunter. Your hound's are a tool to help the hunt.
B. If you hunt for mostly the enjoyment of listening to the hounds and the pride of a good pack you are a Hounds-men. The game is a byproduct of the hound's performance.
How do you see yourself.
I understand that everyone is some of both. Just like everyone has both a left and right hand. However most of us are either left or right handed. Most of us are either a Hunter 1st or a Houndsmen 1st.

Hunter or Houndsman

Houndsman of coarse. To most of us that have hounds they are just part of our family. The satisfaction comes from seeing them do what we train them to do. No matter what the game is.

definately houndsmen 1st for me , sure we all enjoy the bragging rights on that big bear ,cat or coon but i am there for my dogs and the enjoyment of watching and listening to there performance and knowing that i had chosen the right pup to train for this task . being able to watch that pup develope into a machine per say .a highly soffisticated sense of smell , agility and brains to work a track from start to finish. another reason why i am just a back woods country hunter and always have been . i enjoy it to much , i have heard to many horror story's with competition hunting , never tried it most likely never will . if i were to competition hunt i dont think it would be all fun. that is what i have now , fun and lots of it . something me and my friends and kids to enjoy.... happy hunting all

Houndswoman.... I prefer to leave MOST everything in the tree.

To me it is about listening to the hounds work. Seeing a pup grow into it's full potential and finding it's place in the pack. Having your dogs give you 100% and look at you when you come into the tree like "Look what we put up for you" Having everything finally come together after you and the dogs have put in a lot of blood, sweat and in our case, a lot of cursing.

I love coming home from work and seeing the dogs get excited that I am home. I love the feeding, and upkeep on them. I love getting great reports from people who have gotten a pup from me. That their pup is doing a wonderful job and they couldn't be happier. I don't even mind the trash running and the frustration of a young dumb pup. Heck I don't even mind my couch smelling like a hound during cat season when they get to come inside for a job well done..

Nope it is not about how big of an animal they tree, though I do love seeing a big old cat sitting up there. It is about everything they do to get it there.

Houndsman...(my view at least!)

I took a friend on a lion hunt a few years ago. This gentleman is a shooter and gun collector first, and hunts to use a new gun. I told him that with us it was all about the dog. I was living in the Midwest at the time and my friend from Indiana up with some good friends here in Utah that do a good job of putting up cats. We went and he was able to get his lion on the first day. After that we went with another group that was hunting in Nevada. Finally, after hearing all of our stories and seeing how we went about the hunt, he started saying..."It IS ALL about the dogs isn't it?" I just smiled, because until people experience it, it is hard for them to picture.

NOT SURE

Almost 100% of the game I run is crop damage . Bears in corn or hives ect . I have had coon hounds forever and about ten years ago we became infested with bears . I love to hear the hounds run for sure :: BUT my main outcome of the run is to kill the bear . Trophy has nothing to do with it . small bears grow up too be big bears . Eight acre corn fields turn into four in short order . Hives become splinters of wood ect .
I concider them pests that can kill your livestock or kids as quick as they can ruin your crops . So I TRY to only run a bear once .
Before someone chews me a NEW bum hole ::: I would love to run bear and look at them and go home . Run them another day seems like a GREAT idea . But wether it is coon or bear ..... If you have so many you cann;t farm or live a normal life you have to kill off some or they will put you out of buisness .
Most bear hunters here are stump hunters and they put out some bait. Shoot a bear and that is it for the season .
I have dogs so I can take alot of different people out hunting and MAYBE shoot more bears .
If I ever see the day that the bears are not quite so plentiful I will run them for sport . But right now if I can get one treed it has to be culled . I have seen 1200.00 dollars worth of corn damage in one field .And there is many fields.

There is No reason for anyone to chew anything. You have every right to hunt for whatever reason you want. I am a bit surprised that more people have not stated your opinon.
I myself am a Hounds-men But I support your reason as well as my own.

In your case I should have said Hounds-woman<LOL>

I am a houndsman as far as bear hunting is conserned. I have treed hundreds of bear without ever pulling the trigger on one my self. ( I have had a few shot out to my hounds.)

On deer or other non hound game I am a HUNTER.

About the hounds

Its about the hounds first for me. Its nice to be able to take game....but wouldn't be the same w/o the hounds.
Some of the most enjoyable memories for me, is young hunters getting to take something over hounds for the first time.

houndsmen, my hounds never seem fast enought to take a trophy but the shure can make some noise.......just kidden....theres nothing better than hunten on a calm quiet night with a bright moon waiting for the dogs to strike, then when they let loose it seems so loud that you can almost see the leaves rattel on the trees.....thats what its about for me.
