Question about purple cattle tags

Has anyone had the purple tags interfering with a dogs sense of smell?

I wouldn't put anything on a dog made for a 1000 lb animal. When the formula and chemicals were made they weren't made for am animal needing to smell lol

I have heard tons using them amd swearing bu them. Personally, I wouldn't even consider them.

Python-purple

Been using them, no ticks, mosquitoes or flies

Go to YouTube and watch Houndsman XP video on how to put them on. Chris does a nice job. He also has a great podcast with Shorty on a lot of tricks on different things you can save money on when treating your hounds. They are not Vets nor am I, but having had hounds for almost 70 years, I have used/done a lot of what they say with no problems. One thing you may find interesting is the dosage of ivermectin “if” you give it orally.

It’s called “Caring for Hounds on a Budget”

I use them. I cut them in half and zip tie to the collar. I have not watched the houndsman xp as stated above but I am guessing they probably do it very similar. I have not noticed any negative side effects. THEY WORK!

I’ve never used them for same reason but I had a buddy using some type of cattle tag on the collar that he swears ruined the dogs sense of smell. The dog got sick and he took it to the vet and was told to never put a tag on a dog that was made for 1000 lb animal. It’s just not worth the risk for me to save a few dollars.

If that was a good idea wouldn't someone make "dog tags"?

Just a FYI--

There is nothing on the box that has a "weight" on it so I don't know where you are coming up with this 1000 pounds??? If fact, it says it can be used on calves. So I would say a 35 pound calf to a 2000 pound bull uses the same tag. BUT it's still your choice, no one is making you try it.

I went and looked for this video. The Caring for Hounds on a Budget is one of their podcast (talk show style). Very good information! The one where he actually shows how to put the tag on the collar is on youtube like you said it is labeled “PRO TIP CATTLE EAR TAGS FOR YOUR HOUNDS’ TICKS?! HXP TIP OF THE WEEK #3”.
Thought I would post because it took me a while to find.
I do something very similar to what he does with the small collar but I use a zip tie instead of a rivet and I wrap the zip tie all the way around the collar too.
Thanks OLD TIMER for the info!

Wouldn't that be flea/tick collars?

For my beagles I cut them in thirds and wrap around the collar so only half the tag is touching. I use bravecto and a seresto collar on the coondogs but may change with the price increases.

I have tried the flea and tick collars in the past. They didn’t work near as good as the cattle tags have worked for me. Not to mention saving $ with using the tags. A box of 20 cattle tags will cost between $45-$50. I cut each tag in half so I can treat 40 dogs for what 1 flea collar costs at about $50-$60 each. Also the cattle tags last about 4 months. Which is about how long I saw the flea collars “somewhat” working. It is all preference in my eyes, if something works for you, then it is right for you. If it don’t, then find something else. To answer the original question, I have not seen or noticed any negative side effects and it accomplishes what I use it for.

Up here

I put them on when the snow leaves which is usually mid April and as of today, they are still keeping the flies away and no ticks. I plan on taking them off when I do the ivermax treatment Oct 1st.

What kind of flea collar are you buying for $50 - $60 dollars each?

1 “Seresto” collar at my local Tractor Supply store is $67.98. A few posts above stated they were using seresto and bravecto. I used the seresto as a price comparison.

I'm a little confused as to why so many questions about wormer and fleas. I give my dog Simparica and nothing else. Am I missing something?

I use the Simparica Trio. No fleas or ticks or heartworm etc. Till something changes that's what I'll keep doing.

I agree Simparica Trio is good! Other than not treating for tapeworms it is the same results and by far the EASIEST all around thing you can do hands down.

The reason why I use what I use is to save money. I get the same results as Simparica Trio and save HUNDREDS of dollars per year by doing so. If I only had 1 dog, I probably would use Simparica Trio.

Treatment on a budget?!

Many of you have seen me post this before and also order your flea/tick meds from here already but for those of you who don't check it out. Prices are about half what they are at your vet. I've been ordering from them for years now. We are currently using Nexgard Spectra but they carry all the major brands. I do not recommend Bravecto as it is a 3 month tablet and is only affective for the lone star tick for 8 weeks and not the full 12. Lone star ticks are known carriers of Lymes disease. I buy the extra large chews and cut them in half for regular size hounds. Shack is 85-90 lbs and I give him 3/4 and give his other piece to one of the smaller pups. It is safe for puppies as young as 8 weeks (for them i just give a very small piece). Use PayPal at checkout and meds ship out of Australia.
