Oh yes, I've had many dogs come down with Lyme Disease at well as my father-inlaw, several of my officers etc. It is a nasty business.
What kind of horses did you show? I used to do carriage rallies ( ride and drive, Ladies Singles, Ladies to Drive etc ) with a 16.3HH black TB/Holsteiner and I also showed out of Westbrook Hunt Club in the 80's. I had a bay TB that was Reserve State CH. CHSA Adult Hunter in 1984. He put me on my head more times than I can count!!!!! LOL

OK, Did Equitation,Hunters and jumpers as a kid then did a therapeutic riding program and had students later who did pony club, dressage and eventing. My first horse was a tiny Trakhener Arab cross. Bought him back as an old man and he's buried here. What a dressage horse! Yup., Landing on head...LOL... part of riding. MY brain injury is from truck accident, not horses. Oh my! Stoneleigh Burnham in the 70's......Did you know a Lorelei Fredrickson? She had a liver chestnut hunter named "Dunkirk". I think she may have been there later but the woman that gave me my TB/ Holsteiner later married Lorelei's dad.
Whatever...are we getting into "Six Degrees of Separation" here? LOL
And yes. The "nytwind" stands for my kennel name of "Nightwind" as in "CH Nightwind Come Hell or Hiwater" my Rott that won 82 BOBs in 2000 including BOB at Westminster ( I hope you all will forgive me for that atrocious "lead in" to a brag! LOL )

Horses...

...LOL.. WAY off subject for sure... Names sound familiar. A lot is just a blur though. Horses name is More familiar...LOL... Like the kennel name, sounds like it's been a success in hte past and I hope the future's even better!

Howdy group.

Just ran across this and wanted at add my 2bits.
I own a KBD bought from a fellow in Wy. that uses them
on his job as Hunters.

Now I don't know alot about this breed but I do know that
he can use his nose and well! This dog followed a bear scent
drag (with the wind blowing away from him) about 100yds and found the tree I tied it up in. He was about 6months old at
the time. I used the drag again acouple of weeks ago and the
same thing, only this time I put alot of curves and switchbacks
in the trail. He hunts with his nose and eyes both but I would
say manely with his nose. He's 1 1/2 yr. old now.

I took him out yesterday along with my yearling Bluetick
and 2 1/2 yr old Walker. We went out in the woods where
there are bears and bobcats,cougars. We went into an
area where the road washed out several years ago and
walked the creek and the other side where the old road is.

We didn't run up on anything (probably due to my health and can't walk very long) we went about a mile and the dogs seemed
to hunt just fine. Up and down both sides of the creek and
when we started walking up the road the KBD would check out both sides of the road about 50yds away infront. If I took to
long to reach him he would wait in the shade for me to catch up.

I dont know why but the hounds were quite happy to on what ever side they felt like but he's the boss. They all ran around
with thier heads down an would shoot off the road down a
hillside to check bottom or run up the cutbank, and it was
about 90 degrees.

I bought this KBD to hunt in combination with hounds and it
seems to me to work every well. Anyone in doubt about thier
hunting abilities I'd be happy to run him with you, just
remember we are rookies at this, but he knows what hes doing.

Thanks for the information. Did you have any trouble with the KBD running off? In CT there are too many other people out there with loose dogs but in VT I'd love to let her go but have been warned about the possibility of her taking off completely if she sees any game. I especially wouldn't want to see her get shot for running deer etc. up there.

No, I have no fear of him running off. He will run out a certain
distance, check scent and bark if he really wants to go after it
but he does check back in in 1/2 hour at most.

Seems like when he smells something he likes he tears off
after it but after awhile if I don't let him know I'm on the way
he comes back enough for me to see him or the other way
around. We live where deer and elk occassionally run thru
the yard, he'll bark but not run or chase after them.

When he's called he comes---

I've never owned a dog like this before We've had German
Shepards for 20yrs, and none of them had the confidence.independance or smarts as this guy. When
he was about 3mos old he would pull my 1 1/2 old grandson
on a little snow sled and thought it was cool. This is
also the most athletic dog I've ever had.

If you have bonded with this dog of yours he will want to
do what you want. Course they REALLY like to think.
They don't just react like some old mutt. If I can figure out
or more to the point get my wife to I'll send a couple pics.

Have fun and enjoy him or her, they're really great dogs.
